Cricket Dictionary of Terms

Cricket is an old sport rich in history: it is also rich in language and the terms that is uses. Here are just some of these:

All out - when 10 out of 11 batsmen have either been dismissed or cannot play due to injury.

All rounder - a player who can play both batting and bowling (sometimes wicket keeping also).

All round spin - a player who can do both a wrist and finger spin type of bowl.

Anchor - a very skilled batsman who is capable for playing for a very long period of play and will usually play defensively.

Back foot contact - the place of the bowler as his back foot hit's the ground just before he actually delivers the bowl.

Bail - a piece of wood that sits on top of the stumps to make up the wicket.

Beach cricket - a type of cricket that is played in Australia and the Caribbean by nature and as the name would suggest, is played on the beach.

Block - to either play a shot defensively or to deliver a defensive shot.

Bowling action - the moves that the bowler makes in order to deliver the ball in the direction of the wicket.

Braking - the point where the bails are separated from the wicket.

Castled - to be out bowled by a full length of the pitch.

Collapse - well a lot of wickets are lost in not very much time at all!

Cricket ball - the ball used in the game. This is made up of cork and bound with leather which is stitched.
